Christian Schmid appointed Chairman of the Executive Board (CEO) of St.Galler Kantonalbank

The Board of Directors of St.Galler Kantonalbank appoints Christian Schmid as Chairman of the Executive Board (CEO) as of May 1, 2021. Since 2008, he has been Member of the Executive Board. He will succeed Roland Ledergerber.

Long-standing connection to St.Galler Kantonalbank and the market area

Dr. Christian Schmid (51) has been Member of the Executive Board and Head of the Corporate Center of St.Galler Kantonalbank since August 2008. In this function, he is responsible for Business Development, Human Resources, Controlling & Finance, Legal & Compliance and the Risk Office. Prior to this, from 2004 to 2008, he was Managing Director of RSN Risk Solution Network AG, that he built up to the leading outsourcing platform for credit risk management in Switzerland. From 1999 to 2003, Christian Schmid already worked for St.Galler Kantonalbank in management positions in the business unit Retail and Commercial Clients. Before joining St.Galler Kantonalbank, he worked at the Swiss Institute of Banking and Finance at the University of St.Gallen.

Christian Schmid grew up in Uzwil and lived in the city of St.Gallen for many years. For 10 years, he has lived in Rapperswil-Jona with his wife and three children. He studied at the University of St.Gallen and received his doctorate (Dr. oec. HSG) in 2003.

Profound knowledge of the banking business with many years of management experience

Christian Schmid has profound knowledge of the banking business and many years of management experience. As Member of the Executive Board, he has had a strong influence on the strategy and the development of St.Galler Kantonalbank over the past 12 years. Christian Schmid was appointed after a comprehensive search process and out of a wide range of possible candidates. Thomas Gutzwiller, Chairman of the Board of Directors: «The Board of Directors is convinced that with Christian Schmid the best candidate will be entrusted with the management of St.Galler Kantonalbank. He has all the skills needed to further develop the bank and ensures appropriate management continuity.»

Successor of Roland Ledergerber

Christian Schmid will succeed Roland Ledergerber as of May 1, 2021. As announced in February 2020, Roland Ledergerber will retire after 18 years in the Executive Board. At the Annual General Meeting of St.Galler Kantonalbank on Mai 5, 2021, he will be proposed for election to the Board of Directors. It is planned, after one year as a member of the Board of Directors, to propose Roland Ledergerber to the Annual General Meeting in 2022 as successor to Chairman Thomas Gutzwiller.
